FZS Goals & Strategy

"We are advocates of a world in which biological diversity is appreciated as the basis of all life and as a fundamental value. This is the precondition for the preservation of our quality of life and that of future generations." (FZS Vision, 2001)"

Our goal is to protect the natural diversity of species in important ecosystems across the globe – in partnership with and for people. Although our long-term vision is framed in broad terms, the objective is more precise, specifying FZS’s mission: FZS is dedicated to protecting nature’s diversity. It is also important to focus on the most significant ecosystems. What holds for our vision as well as our overall objectives is the recognition that we as humans are both the source of environmental problems and potential problem-solvers. Biological diversity on earth must be preserved and protected not only for human beings, but as an end in itself.

BIOLOGICAL CITERIA FOR FZS PROJECTS

What is the perspective on the project level? What kinds of projects qualify for FZS funding? A catalogue of priorities has been developed that makes it possible to evaluate existing and proposed projects. To start with, the region must be a core area of biodiversity as defined by international criteria. FZS is particularly concerned with conserving the habitats of appealing species that can be used to drive education efforts. In addition to a demonstrable need for action, prospects for success must also be discernible. As a rule, FZS does not support marine projects or basic research. Other selection factors include region (former FZS project areas, for example) and geographical scope (areas must be large enough to sustain natural developments). In the case of biomes – large natural communities defined by the predominant vegetation and organisms adapted to that particular environment – FZS will henceforth focus on savannahs, inland wetlands and tropical forests.

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF PROJECT SUPPORT

The FZS budget is allocated as follows:

  • Africa 50 % (primarily in East Africa)
  • Europe 20 %
  • South America 20 %
  • Southeast Asia 7 %
  • Another 3 % are served as an emergency fund for unforeseen short term needs
